Yesterday after everyone left, I raced around cleaning up here and there just for the fun of it, throwing away food we won’t eat, and trying to reduce the amount of contraband staring me in the face all day long.
One of the things I tossed was a foil package full of chocolate cupcakes from M’s classroom party. I crumpled up the packet, folded the foil around the cupcakes and threw it in the trash.
Some time later, I was sitting at my desk probably blogging, and this thought crossed my mind: “Before we know it, Avery will have picked up on the whole ‘better be quiet when we’re doing a Wrong Thing so as to have more time making messes/ruining things/changing the settings on the remote control’ and when that happens, we’re screwed.”
I suppose that thought crossed my mind because things were eerily silent for a few seconds. When I turned around to look for her, she was just rounding the corner of the kitchen. From my place on the far side of the room, it looked as if she’d been coloring her hands and face with a Sharpie. When I called out to her, she turned and ran, and that’s when I knew I was In Trouble.
By the time I caught up with the little trash digger, all that was left of the cupcake was a tiny chunk in one hand. She was laughing defiantly at me, shoving her hands into her mouth, and crouching down facing away from me while she devoured her crack.
That child went into the trash can.
Retrieved the foil ball.
Unwrapped the crumpled foil.
Took a cupcake OUT OF THE PAPER, and then stood there eating it for a while before she wandered into the living room.
And now she thinks fun things hide in the trash. Yay!
